The first phase of a £3million investment into Weston’s ?crematorium has been unveiled, with plans for a new five-acre memorial and cemetery.
Dignity Funeral Services made a pledge to upgrade the Ebdon Road site in Worle after taking it over from North Somerset Council two years ago.
This week, the firm set out a proposal to upgrade the cremators, refurbish the chapel and create a new memorial garden on five acres of farming land next to the site.
The garden will include ponds and streams, gravel paths, seating and lighting.
In a statement, Dignity, which runs 30 crematoria around the country, said: “The existing crematorium was built in the early 1960s. One of the three cremators was decommissioned while the remaining cremators will not comply with future changes in emission standards and are judged to be near to the end of their working life.
“The refurbishment and alterations to the crematorium are essential to the future operations of the crematorium.”
The plan has been unveiled as discussions begin between Dignity and North Somerset Council on an environmental impact assessment.
In correspondence to the authority, the firm said the development would have minimal impact.
