Rugby crematorium bid sparks outrage

Published by in English ·

RESIDENTS have voiced objections to proposals for a crematorium and cemetery in Rugby.
Over 100 people have raised concerns about plans to develop the facility on land off Ashlawn Road after viewing plans at Paddox Methodist Church where they were on display over the weekend.
The proposal for the £3 million crematorium and cemetery has been developed jointly between Rugby Borough Council and Daventry District Council.
Coun Noreen New, ward borough councillor for Paddox, said she has been contacted by scores of residents who are unhappy with the proposals and plan to hand in a petition to Rugby Borough Council by the end of the week.
Coun New said: "I have been inundated with calls and emails from residents who are totally dismayed at the speed in which these proposals for a crematorium and cemetery are being rushed through during the peak holiday season.
"I will be requesting an extension to the application period to allow people who are away on holiday more time to make a reasoned response to this application."
Coun New added increased traffic was a concern shared by residents and many felt not enough consideration had been given to the impact a slow moving funeral procession would have on already busy main roads in the area.
The land which the councils want to develop is currently open countryside used as a recreational area by people such as dog walkers.
Coun New added: "It's Rugby Borough Council owned land and people are questioning if it's a done deal. They can see the writing's on the wall because the land won't bring in money if it stays as farmland - it's more lucrative as a crematorium.
"Residents know the crematorium's needed but it's a very difficult issue. They believe locations should be considered elsewhere and they feel as though the proposals are being rushed through. People were concentrating on the Mast Site and then suddenly they have crematorium plans to look at."
Residents want a full environmental assessment carried out before the application is submitted later in the summer.
Rugby Borough Council said it received support for the plans when they were first unveiled at St Andrew's Rugby Club and would take resident's comments into account when finalising plans.
