Cambridge City Crematorium plans £2m expansion

Published by in English ·

Plans have been submitted for a £2m expansion to a city crematorium.

The proposals for Cambridge Crematorium, on Huntingdon Road, include building a new crematory to house the furnaces.

Paul Necus, the city council's head of specialist services, said the investment would modernise the service and reduce pollution.

If the plans are approved by South Cambridgeshire District Council, work could begin in July.

Mr Necus said: "A new crematory will allow us to reduce the environmental impact from cremations, and meet our objective to achieve 100% mercury abatement by the end of 2012.

"We also plan to provide better protection for mourners from bad weather by covering some of the courtyard area."

He added: "We will be managing the work with great sensitivity, respecting the fact that we have a continuing operation at the crematorium."

Work on the new crematorium is expected to last until spring 2012.
