THIEVES forced their way into Markeaton Crematorium and stole sheets of copper from the roof of the building.
Police are investigating the incident which happened between 6pm on Friday and 10.55am on Saturday .
The burglars got inside the site in Markeaton Lane after cutting the chain and padlock on the crematorium gates.
Acting Sergeant Liam Caldecott said: "The sheeting is very distinctive as it is green in appearance due to oxidisation.
"We believe whoever has taken it would have had to use a vehicle due to the weight involved and that is why the padlock on the gate has been forced.
"It is quite an isolated location but a lot of people use Markeaton Lane as a cut through between Allestree and the A52.
"I'd like to ask if anybody did see any activity at the site which in hindsight they think was suspicious or out of place to contact the police."
Anyone with information is asked to contact Derbyshire police on 0345 123 3333 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
