POLICE are hunting for thieves who stole two urns from Enfield Crematorium.
A devastated man from Essex discovered the ashes of his grandparents had been taken from the crematorium, in Great Cambridge Road.
The ashes, which had been there for several years, were in bronze and stoneware urns, and would have very little sell-on value, Enfield Police said, but are of “extreme sentimental value”.
A crematorium in Hereford has raised thousands of pounds for charity by recycling metals such as hip and knee implants left behind after cremations.
Herefordshire Council said it used to bury the metal in its crematorium grounds but had started recycling the metal for charity instead.
It said it had so far donated £4,485 to MacMillan Cancer Support.
As Malta’s cemeteries become fuller the Health Ministry is considering the introduction of cremation as part of a policy to tackle the growing lack of burial space.
“The policy aims at addressing the situation in which the demand for more graves is getting bigger every year, and thus considers various solutions and options available... which range from building other graves and adding grave sites to options such as a crematorium,” a ministry spokesman said.
