BURIAL space at Chelmsford Crematorium is likely to run out in ten years.
Cllr Ian Grundy, Chelmsford Council’s cabinet member for safer communities, made the announcement during a discussion about an increase in cemetery and cremation fees at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday night.
He said a detailed report will be presented to cabinet members in the new year which will look into alternatives such as eco friendly burials.
He said: “Other options are available and we will be looking at a number of different things.”
Councillors approved a four per cent increase in all cemetery and cremation charges at the meeting.
This will see the cost of a cremation go up from £519 to £540 in the 2012/2013 financial year.
A new Saturday service is also planned to be introduced and an extension to the South Chapel, which will increase seating capacity by more than 100, is underway in order to compete with neighbouring crematoria.
